London to Paris 2016 - Part Four

London to Paris 2016 - Part Four

Just to recap on 5th May 2016 a team from KDW will be cycling from London to Paris to raise money for Myeloma UK....

With just 8 weeks to go until the London to Paris ride begins our fundraising efforts are picking up pace!! We are delighted to have raised £2,718 so far!

This is expected to increase dramatically over the next week, the cycling team have promised to have their legs waxed if staff at KDW can raise £400!

We have had some very generous donations from family and friends as well as from some of our professional connections. We would like to take this opportunity to thank Cornelian, Octopus Investments, Blackfinch, Brooks Macdonald, LV= Protection Team and Close Brothers for their very generous support.

How are Team KDW getting on?

Excitement levels are running high amongst our team of riders, Marcus Maisey, Nic Kamintzis, Lawrie Jellows and Mark Peddle. However they are expecting the nerves to creep in the closer they get to the 5th May.

Although the fundraising is going well, Team KDW’s training is having varying levels of success.

Marcus and Lawrie reached the top of Bison Hill in one of their bike rides in early February. Marcus has remained the most active team member, with his longest ride taking him on a 50 mile route.

His next challenge is to hit the 60 mile mark. He has become so dedicated to his training regime he even incorporated a cycling holiday into his 50th birthday celebrations last month. There are rumours in the KDW office that Marcus may make an appearance in the next Tour De France!

The fast approaching start date of the ride has given Nic a much needed motivational push. He has attended another spin class and also booked his bike in for repairs! He has also stuck to his new year’s resolution of quitting smoking.

While Lawrie is still paying for his gym membership he is yet to pay it another visit. He has however been out for another two bike rides with Marcus, taking his longest ride up to a grand total of 45 miles. After feeling surprisingly ok after that ride, Lawrie is feeling quietly confident.

Mark has been training hard. However his training hasn’t seen him take to his bike, instead he has been focusing on the Berkhamsted half marathon which he completed on the 6th March. With this out of the way Mark is now ready to get back on the bike!

The next 8 weeks are going to be a crucial time for our team of riders and they are planning to step their training up a gear. Lawrie however has an excuse to go easy as he and his wife welcomed a beautiful baby boy on Sunday 6th March!

Why are we raising money for Myeloma UK?

In 2012 a close family member of Lawrie’s was diagnosed with Myeloma, at the time Lawrie had never heard of this particular cancer.

After learning more about the cancer and Myeloma UK, Lawrie has become a keen fundraiser. Last year he cycled from London to Brighton to raise money for Myeloma UK.

This year he taken on a bigger challenge in cycling from London to Paris and has also enlisted some support in the form of Mark Lemon, Matt McParland, Neil Hutchinson and KDW’s Marcus Maisey, Mark Peddle and Nic Kamintzis. They have also recently recruited a new addition, Will Cayzer from Close Brothers.

They are collectively aiming to raise £10,000 to support Myeloma UK’s ongoing research. Myeloma UK is the sole UK charity dealing exclusively with Myeloma. They do not receive any government funding which means they rely almost entirely on voluntary donations and fundraising activities; which is why our support is so vital.
